FREEZE TIPS

IF THERE IS NO POWER OUTAGE AND PUMPS ARE ABLE TO RUN

TIP # 1: Be sure the main pool pump is running continuously while the temperature is below freezing.

  • IF YOU HAVE AN AUTOMATION SYSTEM, the freeze protection device will automatically turn the main pool pump on when the temperature drops to around 34 degrees. The Freeze Protect will keep your main pool pump running as long as the temperature remains close to freezing. Be sure to look out at your pool to ensure it is running and the Freeze Protect is working properly. If it does not turn itself on approx. every 20 minutes you’ll want to turn it on manually. Freeze Protect will come on and run your main pool pump approx. every 20 minutes. It typically isn’t set up to run booster pumps or water feature pumps so you’ll need to ensure those are also running.
  • IF YOU DO NOT HAVE AN AUTOMATION SYSTEM and your pool is functioning off a standard yellow dial timer then we recommend running your pool continually during the freeze. Be sure you remember to run all pumps on your pool pad including and not limited to the main pool pump, Booster pump, and any water feature pumps.

TIP # 2: Make sure the pool is clean.

  • Clogged Skimmers and Main Drains will prevent your pool from circulating properly
  • No Circulation = Potential Damaged Equipment

TIP # 3: Maintain the proper water level.

  • Low water levels will result in low to no circulation.
  • No Circulation = Potential Damaged Equipment
***PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU HAVE A CHLORINE GENERATOR SUCH AS A SALT CELL, IT’S DESIGNED TO TURN OFF WHEN THE WATER TEMPERATURE DROPS BELOW 50 DEGREES. DO NOT BE ALARMED – THIS IS A SAFETY MEASURE TO PREVENT POSSIBLE DAMAGE TO YOUR SALT CELL***

FREEZE TIPS AND POWER OUTAGE – UNABLE TO RUN EQUIPMENT

TIP # 1: TURN ALL POOL AND SPA EQUIPMENT OFF AND TURN OFF THE BREAKERS TO ALL POOL AND SPA EQUIPMENT. MAKE SURE THERE IS NO POWER TO THE POOL/SPA EQUIPMENT.

TIP # 2: OPEN UP THE AIR RELIEF VALVE ON YOUR FILTER (Allow a couple of minutes for all of the water to drain out of the filter and back into the pool before proceeding to next step.)

TIP # 3: REMOVE ALL PUMP LIDS.

TIP # 4: PULL OUT ALL OF THE DRAIN PLUGS ON ALL EQUIPMENT, FILTERS, PUMPS, BOOTER PUMPS, WATER FEATURE PUMPS, HEATER, ETC ****NOTE: ALL PUMPS HAVE 2 DRAIN PLUGS, BOTH NEED TO BE REMOVED.

TIP # 5: FILTER DRAIN PLUGS ARE USUALLY LOCATED AT THE BOTTOM OF THE FILTER (NOT UNDERNEATH, BUT AT THE BOTTOM.)

TIP # 6: IF YOU HAVE ACTUATORS, YOU NEED TO TURN THEM TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL PIPES ARE OPEN SO THAT THE WATER CAN DRAIN OUT. ANOTHER OPTION WOULD BE TO REMOVE THE ACTUATORS COMPLETELY (BY REMOVING THE 4 MOUNTING SCREWS) THEN REMOVE THE HANDLE OFF OF THE ACTUATORS AND USE IT TO MOVE THE VALVE MANUALLY.

TIP # 7: FOR THOSE WHO HAVE WATER-FILL VALVES, REMEMBER THAT THIS IS AN EXTENSION TO THE WATER SUPPLY AND TO YOUR HOME AND THESE PIPES NEED TO BE PROTECTED FROM EXPOSURE JUST LIKE ALL OF THE OTHER PIPES TO YOUR HOME.

***IMPORTANT – AFTER THE FREEZE EVENT IS OVER AND YOU ARE READY TO GET YOUR EQUIPMENT BACK UP AND RUNNING, REVERSE ALL OF THE ABOVE, PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOUR BREAKERS REMAIN OFF UNTIL EVERYTHING HAS BEEN REINSTATED.

***Note – These are preventative steps, but we can in no way guarantee that this will completely eliminate the possibility of your equipment freezing and your pipes bursting.

**The main desired goal it to make sure all of the water is drained from all of the pipes and equipment.
